What are brake pads？

Although brake pads and brake shoes are similar in function, they are not the same thing.

Brake pads are part of a disc brake system. In such a system, the brake pads are squeezed together by the caliper against the rotor disc - hence the name "disc brakes". The squeezing of the pads against the rotor creates the friction needed to bring the car to a stop.

Brake shoes are part of a drum brake system. Brake shoes are crescent-shaped components with a rough friction material on one side. They are located on the inside of the brake drum. When the brake pedal is depressed, the brake shoes are forced outward, pushing against the inside of the drum and slowing the wheels.
